The National Accreditation Commission (CNA, in Spanish) granted a five-year certification to the prestigious postgraduate degree.
This medical specialty was the first accredited by The Universidad Católica del Maule (UCM) under the new system of quality assurance in higher education, with the certification of its postgraduate degree in Family Medicine for five years.
«It is a milestone for the faculty because although our programs are accredited, they are accredited under the previous law. This is the first specialty that the National Accreditation Commission recognizes for the university under the system implemented since 2018,» said Iván Castillo, dean of the School of Medicine of the campus.
Family Medicine corresponds to one of the eleven medical specialties offered by UCM, ranging from general surgery to pathological anatomy. It was created in 2019 and the program is three years long.
«The program responds to the health model that the Minsal (Ministry of Health) wants to implement, in tune with developed countries. Faced with the lack of family doctors, the university made a bet and sent medical students to train at the main universities in Santiago. This academic body returned and we can say that we have the most robust team in the region», added the authority.
«Now those who enter this specialty -he pointed out- can have the confidence and the peace of mind of studying in an institution with high standards. In addition, from 2025 onwards, the Superintendency of Health will require specialists to have graduated from an accredited program. So, this is huge because our students will have this certification”.
For the Director of Postgraduate Studies, Karina Vilches, the validation of the CNA is the result of work between the Vice-Rectory of Research and Postgraduate Studies, the General Directorate of Institutional Quality Assurance, and the School of Medicine.
«This first result will be the arrowhead, as we project that during 2024 we will continue to develop the self-evaluation processes of our specialties and subspecialties. To be able to contribute to closing the gap of medical specialists and to do so with professionals of quality is something that fills us with pride,» he said.
In addition to the medical and health specialties and subspecialties, the Universidad Católica del Maule offers eleven doctorates and 21 master’s degrees, fourteen of which have been certified by the evaluation commission.
