The renowned organization EACH, which promotes effective patient-centered healthcare communication, appointed Mariana Lazzaro-Salazar, PhD in Linguistics, as its coordinator in Latin America and representative in Chile.
In order to increase its influence in Spanish-speaking countries, the International Association for Communication in Healthcare (EACH) has appointed Mariana Lazzaro-Salazar, a researcher at the Universidad Católica del Maule (UCM), as its new coordinator in Latin America.
This is a strategic position for the UK-based organization.
«The association is very interested in attracting the attention of more researchers in Latin America, because it wants to reach an audience that speaks other languages and open the organization to different cultures and realities,» said the PhD in Linguistics, who also received the responsibility of representing Chile before the organization.
«My most immediate task will be to promote EACH in the Chilean context. We will do that with a series of seminars, which we will develop with the UCM, Madrid representatives of the association and the Hospital de Alta Complejidad en Red ‘El Cruce’ of Argentina, with the support of the president of the organization’s advisory committee, Lode Verreyen. The EACH will hold its annual conference this year in Zaragoza, Spain. Therefore, the idea is for Chilean and Latin American researchers to present and participate in that event,» she said.
Created in 2001, the organization is dedicated to two goals, as stated on its website: «the relief of sickness and the preservation of health of patients by the promotion of effective evidence-based patient-centred healthcare communication between patients, relatives and healthcare practitioners throughout the world.”
«While interdisciplinary, EACH is made up mostly of physicians. I met this association at a conference held in Glasgow in 2022, where I presented the results of my FONDECYT Initiation project No. 11190052 that addressed the doctor-patient relationship in intercultural contexts in Chile. There, Jesús González Lama, who is in charge of the Spanish team, kindly incorporated me into his work group,» recalled Lazzaro-Salazar, who is also a member of the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of Maule, CIEAM, which belongs to the Maule campus.
The forum to be held by EACH in Zaragoza will take place between 9 and 12 September 2024.
