The Comisión Nacional de Acreditación or CNA (National Accreditation Commission) decided to grant a five-year quality certification to the Ph.D. in Applied Mathematical Modeling program, offered by the Department of Basic Sciences of the campus.
After a rigorous process, the Comisión Nacional de Acreditación (CNA) granted a five-year quality certification to the Ph.D. in Applied Mathematical Modeling, which is taught by the Department of Basic Sciences of the Universidad Católica del Maule (UCM). This is the eighth postgraduate program that the institution has achieved accreditation before the evaluation authority.
«This was the first doctoral program of the University that was initially accredited for three years and now marks once again a milestone by being accredited for five years,» said Karina Vilches, Director of Postgraduate Studies at the University who described the CNA’s resolution as a verification of excellence.
The also Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences added, “For the first time, the University has a five-year accredited program. It is a recognition of the work of the Vice Rector’s Office for Research and Postgraduate Studies, the Department, the faculty committee, the faculty members, and the collaborators. We are very proud of the program and happy for our students”.
The director of the doctoral program, Fernando Córdova-Lepe, said that a key axis of the accreditation was the consolidation of a «novel proposal».He pointed out: “Our proposal is different from what exists nationally; it is not a doctorate in mathematics and neither is a doctorate in applied mathematics, with an emphasis on the creation of mathematical knowledge per se.
Our program is not that; we have a methodological approach to mathematics; our bet is to create knowledge and theoretical developments in non-mathematical disciplines, using mathematics as a method”.
According to Córdova-Lepe, mathematics is a methodology that can solve problems in other areas, as a language that «aspires to reflect the structure of the whole.» “The fun part is that it is a way of experimenting in fictitious terms, to be able to draw conclusions and projections, without having the cost of an experimental design. That is a tremendous advantage because there are spaces in which one cannot experiment, either because it is very expensive or because there is no ethical possibility of doing so”, asserted the doctor in Mathematics.
The lines of research of the Ph.D., which began in 2016, are Ecological Systems, Pattern Recognition, Silvoagricultural Systems, and Public Health and Biomedicine. The director pointed out, “We intend to transform mathematicians into broad-spectrum scientists, who know how to work with others, putting mathematics at their service”.
Quality first and foremost
The general director of Aseguramiento de la Calidad Institucional (Institutional Quality Assurance) at UCM, Jeannette Blásquez, also celebrated the accreditation, which she attributed to collaborative work led by «a team in charge of technically advising the academic committees of postgraduate programs.»
«Guiding the reflective work during the self-assessment process is key to being able to identify strengths and weaknesses and then develop a realistic and relevant improvement plan (…). Postgraduate programs can be accredited for between two and ten years. Given that the DMAA is such a young program, it is an excellent result to obtain five years in a second process”, she asserted.
