The activity’s objective was for young women from coastal communities to know about the realities of women in different scientific areas.
In order to bring together students from multiple educational establishments in the coastal area of the Maule region, a «speed-dating» type of activity was held, an idea raised by the Red Futuro Técnico, Seremi de la Mujer y Equidad de Género and the Seremi de Ciencia, Tecnología, Conocimiento e Innovación. The Universidad Católica del Maule participated greatly in the development of this idea.
Based on this, the Seremi of Women and Gender Equity, Claudia Morales, commented that: «As the Ministry of Women and Gender Equity we work hard to get women and girls involved in science and art, therefore, the space and participation provided by UCM paves a way for them and for the country», said the Seremi.
On the other hand, the Seremi of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, Sofía Valenzuela, claimed that «this meeting was held with seven female researchers from the Maule region, who talked to more than 100 students from high schools in Chanco, Cauquenes, Pelluhue and Empedrado, telling them why they became scientists (…) The role of UCM was very important to make this activity happen, since they told their experiences from different areas of knowledge», she added.
On behalf of the Universidad Católica del Maule, Stella Moisan, representing the Research Center for Advance Studies at Maule (CIEAM), and also the academic researcher of the Department of Translational Medicine of the UCM Faculty of Medicine, Ingrid Carvacho, who said: «We had an important participation as a University, we shared our experiences as scientists from different fields with the students, and we got to talk about more personal things, becoming an enriching activity for the girls and for us».
Finally, the activity culminated with a coffee break where the students from the different high schools were able to continue sharing with the academics. Undoubtedly, an instance full of academic enrichment so that the students could obtain other views regarding their future and discover different realities first-hand.
