The Doctorate in Didactics of Mathematics, offered by the Department of Basic Sciences of the campus, obtained a quality certification for four years.
The quality certification granted by the National Accreditation Commission (CNA by its acronym in Spanish) to the Doctorate in Didactics of Mathematics, taught by the Department of Basic Sciences of the Universidad Católica del Maule (UCM), will be extended until 2026. This is the first certification received by the postgraduate program, created four years ago.
Dr. Victor Monzón, dean of the Department, pointed out: «The accreditation of the program fills us with joy since it is a recognition of the quality, of both the program and the academics that make up its faculty. Thus, positioning our department and university at a competitive level similar to those institutions that have been forming human capital in the Didactics of Mathematics for more years”.
For the director of the doctorate, PhD. María Aravena-Díaz, the certification responds to the solid training offered by the postgraduate program.
“Our doctorate is young and so four years of accreditation is a great achievement. We went through two years of the pandemic and we have one graduate, but we are a first level program, very powerful in terms of training advanced human capital. That these achievements were valued makes us very happy,» she said.
Consolidated offer
The Doctorate in Didactics of Mathematics is the ninth postgraduate degree that the UCM has achieved accreditation. Only last month, the CNA certified for five years the Ph.D. in Applied Mathematical Modeling, offered by the same department.
Dr. Karina Vilches, Director of Postgraduate Studies on the campus, pointed out, “The Department of Basic Sciences has made every effort and followed all the institutional guidelines for this recognition, and the institution, in turn, has given the necessary support not only to the doctorate in didactics, but also to the doctorate in Mathematical Modeling and the Master in Didactics of Experimental Sciences. We have already accredited three of the five programs offered by the department, which speaks of a consolidation”,
The authority stated that the Doctorate in Didactics of Mathematics -whose lines of research are Problem Solving and Mathematical Modeling, Teacher Training and Development of Mathematical Thinking-, gathers experience and youth in the same team. “Basic Sciences was a pioneer in the creation of these programs and the CNA comes to recognize the trajectory of this group of researchers who have developed the discipline for many years; academics who were pioneers and who continue to contribute to the programs. The director of the doctorate has a trajectory at national and international level and a young team of researchers with solid background. We are very proud,» she added.
